For this year, the celebration of the Philippine Independence Day fell on a Sunday. A program was held at Rizal Park in Manila. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte led the celebration of Independence Day. It is his last time to lead the event since his term as president is set to end at noon time of June 30, 2022.

However, based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana lost consciousness amid the Independence Day program held at Rizal Park in Manila. Manila Mayor-elect and outgoing Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna tried to catch the 73-year-old Secretary when he fell.

Based on the report, Lorenzana was rushed to the hospital. According to Defense spokesperson Arsenio Andolong, the Secretary’s fainting may have been due to fatigue because of his busy schedule in the past weeks and the extreme temperature in Luneta during the program.

Andolong cited that the 73-year-old Secretary just attended the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue and he also met with his foreign counterparts in Singapore. He has also been to South Korea and other parts of the Philippines while overseeing the operations of the Department and the transition to the incoming administration.
