LAZARO FRANCISCO WORKS – A list of some of the most famous works of National Artist for Literature Lazaro Francisco, the “Master of the Tagalog Novel”.

Ka Saro or Lazaro Francisco is an award-winning writer known for his “masterful handling of the Tagalog language” and “supple prose style”. He was a staunch advocate of the Filipino language and literature, which shows his utmost commitment to nationalism.

He established Kapatiran ng mga Alagad ng Wikang Pilipino (KAWIKA) in 1958 to further his advocacy about Tagalog as a national as a national language. The University of the Philippines recognized his great works and contribution with a special convocation citing him as the “foremost Filipino novelist of his generation” and “champion of the Filipino writer’s struggle for national identity.”

Ka Saro wrote about imperialism, communism, judicial system, democracy, malnutrition in the country, etc. He also wrote love stories and these love stories were published in Liwayway Magazine. Many were faithfully following his stories. Back then, he earned Php 8.00 per page, the highest-paid writer, because others earned Php 4.00 during that time.

He was proclaimed a national artist in 2009, specifically, a National Artist For Literature.

Ka Saro was born on February 22, 1898, at Orani, Bataan. His parents were Eulogio Francisco and Clara Angeles. He took up an English and Bookkeeping course at Central Luzon Agricultural School. He worked as a clerk in a provincial treasurer’s office and was a provincial assessor until 1963 after passing the civil service examination.

  • gold medal in Ilaw at Panitik for his “Sa Paanan Ng Krus”
  • the highest award in Commonwealth Literary Awards in 1940 for his “Singsing na Pangkasal”
  • Kapisanang Panitik ng Kababaihan awarded his novel “Ilaw Sa Hilaga” as the greatest novel of the republic from 1947 to 1950
  • gold medal from Kalipunang Pambansa ng mga Alagad ng Sining in 1951 for his “Sugat Ng Alaala”
  • Balagtas Award in 1969
  • Republic Cultural Heritage Award in 1970
  • Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award from Manila in 1975
