Based on a report from Manila Times, Robin had the chance to have a meeting with the President just recently. The actor is the third senatorial candidate who had this kind of meeting with the Chief Executive following House Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta and former anti-corruption chief Greco Belgica.

Pres. Duterte said that he was the one who encouraged the Robin Padilla to run. “Ako ‘yung nag-uudyok sa’yo na it might be good if you run because crusader ka, eh. Ayaw mo ng kabulastugan. Gusto mo lang kung ano ‘yung tama,” the President said.

The Chief Executive also said that the nation appreciated that Robin was one of the people who tried to convince Muslim separatist rebels to lay down their arms.

Duterte added that it would be great for Robin to play hero in real-life just like the roles he portrayed in movies.

Back in 2016, PRRD granted Robin Padilla absolute pardon and because of this, his right to vote and run for office were restored. The actor was convicted for illegal possession of firearms in 1994 and in 1997, former president Fidel Ramos granted Padilla “conditional pardon.”

President Duterte previously said that he will be supporting 17 senatorial candidates. However, the Chief Executive said that he will not endorse any presidential candidate but definitely his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte who is running for vice president will have his support.
