Sorsogon Priest Faces Indefinite Suspension for Participating in 2022 Elections
A Sorsogon priest has been placed under an indefinite suspension for running as a municipal councilor in 2022 national elections.
On Wednesday (April 6, 2022), Rev. Jose Alan Dialogo, bishop of Sorsogon announced the suspension of Rev. Father Emmanuel Alparce for participating in the 2022 national elections.
Dialogo made the announcement through a circular posted on the Diocese of Sorsogon’s Facebook page. The circular states that the priest reportedly runs as a municipal councilor in Bacacay town, Albay.
The Code of Conon Law prohibits priest and other religious leader to join public officer and practicing civil power.
“This suspension is a censure which prohibits him completely from exercising the power of order… and the power of governance. At present, he holds no office and is not connected to any parish or institution in the Diocese of Sorsogon,” Dialogo said.
Alparce has been placed under indefinite suspension because of his action. He could only return to his position after the higher office give him a notice. He was also given time to withdraw his candidacy.
“Alpacre remains a priest incarnated to this diocese, not yet dispensed from his vows, especially celibacy, but without the faculty to celebrate the sacraments,” the Sorsogon bishop said.
