Juan Ponce Enrile Volunteers To Defend BBM In Possible Estate Tax Case

On Marcos estate tax issue, Juan Ponce Enrile has this reaction

Former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said that he is volunteering himself to defend UniTeam’s presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos in a possible estate tax case.

Amid the election season, critics of BBM raised the issue of the estate tax that his family was supposed to pay. A record from Supreme Court surfaced that the Marcos family was ordered to pay P23 billion (1997) in estate tax but this was not followed. Reportedly, this has grown to around P203 billion now.

However, the regional directors and district officers of the Bureau of Internal Revenue nationwide said that heirs of the late President Ferdinand Marcos are not compelled to pay the deficiency, based on the report from Manila Bulletin. Then, Senator Koko Pimentel pushed that the Senate should have an investigation regarding this issue.

In a recent report from The Philippine Star, Juan Ponce Enrile said that he is willing to be the lawyer of Bongbong Marcos if this case will pursue. Enrile has a master’s degree in international tax law from Harvard University.

Kasuhan mo si Bongbong? Eh tatawanan ka. Mag-presenta sana ako na maging abogado niya at dalhin nila lahat ng magagaling na mga abogado diyan,” the former lawmaker said. Enrile also agreed with the camp of Marcos that the estate tax proceedings remain pending. He also believes that this issue has been magnified because of political agenda.

Previously, Juan Ponce Enrile said that the 2022 election is a repetition of history and it is because of the presidential candidacy of Bongbong Marcos. He was able to witness the scenario back to the time of the late President Ferdinand Marcos.
