Ammonia Leak Incident at Ice Plant in Navotas Causes 3 Residents to Get Hospitalized

Three residents got hospitalized due to ammonia leak at an ice plant in Barangay NBBS Kaunlaran, Navotas City.

On Tuesday early morning (April 5, 2022), the residents beside Road 10 at Barangay NBBS Kaunlaran in Navotas City have been evacuated due to ammonia leak from an ice plant in the area.

The disgusting smell due to ammonia leak causes breathing difficulty and discomfort among the residents in the area around 3 am. The Emergency Operations Center or action center of Navotas City quickly evacuated the citizens after receiving the report.

Three residents have suffered chest tightening after inhaling disgusting smell from the plant. The three have been rushed to the hospital while a 48-year-old man with a heart disease passed away during the evacuation.

Navotas DRRMO Chief Vonne Villanueva clarified that the authorities will investigate the incident and will secure the deceased man’s medico legal’s copy to determine the real cause of death.

Around 4 am, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) declared that the ammonia lead has been controlled. BFP will continue to investigate to determine the cause of the leak.

Navotas City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported that it was the third leak incident recorded from the ice plant within two years. The ice plant has been temporarily shut down for investigation.

The authorities also advised the public not to go near the plant and wear face masks for their own safety
