The local dance called Lapay Bantigue origin is from this island.

LAPAY BANTIGUE ORIGIN – The Lapay Bantigue is a local dance known for its graceful movements and this is where it originated.

Distinct from the soft and graceful movements similar to a bird when it is in flight is the local dance called Lapay Bantigue. Specifically, the movements are similar to the moves of hovering birds known as seagulls or the LAPAY which are abundant in Barangay Bantigue, Masbate, the place where this local dance has also originated.

Lapay Bantigue Origin

Masbate City is known for its Lapay Bantigue Dance, a festival. This festival is held every year, on the 30th of September, to commemorate the City’s Founding Anniversary. There’s also a legend story about this.

Accordingly, the Lapay dance is promised to Saint Philomena, saint of the fishermen for abundant catch and for a mother to heal her child. When the dance was performed, all these wishes came true – an abundant catch for fishermen and healing for a sickly child happened.

Here are the steps:

STEP 1 – Flutter your arms for 16 counts while sliding sideways. Then, face your partner and do this shade again.
STEP 2 – Do Kumintang. Rotate with your hands in four counts in a clockwise direction and another four counts in a clockwise direction. While doing this, your partner is doing Step 1. After completing the four-count steps, you and your partner will exchange movements and positions.
STEP 3 – Do a pecking position with the back of your hands placed at your forehead and do pecking movements for eight counts.
STEP 4 – Face your partner and bend at each other in opposite directions. Stomp for eight counts then raise your arms while twirling as you face your partner. Do this four times.
STEP 5 – Move your hands up and down for 16 counts. Then face your partner doing the same step in synchronization.
STEP – Do the same movements in Step 1.
