Young Kid Passes Away of Rabies Due to Dog Bite
A young kid dies of rabies due to rabies but some residents cook it as “ulam” instead of burying the dog.
Dog has been one of the most popular animal in various regions all around the world. They are considered as man’s bestfriend because of their approachable and friendly behavior.
A lot of people love dogs and other animals. In fact, most people prefer to adopt dogs as their pets and consider them as a part of their family. Pet owners usually take good care of their dogs.
A 12-year-old boy named Jojo passed away due to rabies after suffering a dog bite on his ear last January 20, 2022. Due to lack of financial capability, the parents brought the kid to a ‘witch doctor’.
The witch doctor gave him an alternative medicine but the poor kid passed away in February 19, 2022. The boy has been rushed to the hospital after suffering from convulsion but he did not make it.
“Nanginig siya kaya itinakbo sa ospital. Itinali nila kasi nagwawala na siya noon,” Jojo’s grandma Precy Rodillas said.
The dog is positive to rabies but some residents in the area cook it as “Ulam”. The LGU conducts contact tracing to locate and identify the individuals who consumed dog meat for anti-rabies vaccine shots.
Ilocos Sur Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Celso Gao-ay said that the indivuduals who consumed the dog meat might face health risk. “Mataas ang risk niyan talaga kung hindi ito agad mabigyan ng bakuna, ‘yung post exposure, lalong-lalo na kung kinain ‘yung utak,” Gao-ay said.
Dog bite is the most common way of rabies transmission in the Philippines. Since 2020, over 1.2 million bites have been recorded while 278 died due to rabies, according to the Department of Health.
