DEOGRACIAS ROSARIO BIOGRAPHY – The life story of Philippines’ “Ama ng Maikling Kathang Tagalog”, Deogracias Rosario.

Born on October 17, 1894, is Deogracias Rosario in Tondo, Manila. He is the “Father of the Tagalog Short Story” or “Ama ng Maikling Kathang Tagalog”. His passion for writing started when he was just 13 years old working for Ang Mithi, among pioneering publications in the country.

He was the president of Samahang Ilaw at Panitik, Kalipunan ng mga Kuwentista, and Kalipunan ng mga Dalubhasa ng Akademya ng Wikang Tagalog. Dr. Genoveva Edroza Matute described him as someone who writes using characters like an artist or people from the high society.

“Kadalasang ginagamit niya (Deogracias A. Rosario) bilang pangunahing tauhan ang mga alagad ng sining, bohemyo at kabilang sa mataas na lipunan; maliban sa ilan, iniiwasan niyang gumamit ng mga tauhang galing sa masa; at paulit-ulit na lumilitaw sa kanyang mga akda ang mga tauhang galing sa ibang bansa, ngunit sa pagbabalik sa tinubuang lupa ay nagiging makawika at makabayan”.

Apart from writing, he was known as a broadcaster. He was a part of Ang Demokrasya in 1912 and Taliba in 1917 (he, later on, became an editor). He also wrote for Buntot Pagi in 1914, a satirical magazine, Pagkakaisa ng Bayan, and Photo-News (also known as Liwayway now).

In his entire career, he was able to produce and publish over 80 short stories, two novels, two series novels, and numerous essays, articles, and poems.

He died on November 26, 1936, at the age of 42.
