Guanzon Criticized for “Ngiwi Challenge” Despite Being a PWD Advocate

Retired Comm, PWD Advocate Rowena Guanzon Criticized over “Ngiwi Challenge”

Retired Commission on Election (Comelec) Commissioner Rowena Guanzon criticized online over “ngiwi challenge” despite being a PWD advocate.

Guanzon has received backlash on social media after posting a new challenge called the #ngiwisquad challenge. Guanzon joined the ‘ngiwi’ challenge started by supporters of Vice President Leni Robredo and detractors of presidential candidate Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr.

The snapshot depicts the commissioner smiling while holding a ‘coke.’ In her article, she also urges other netizens to send in their “ngiwi” posts, promising to award the winner. “Coke in a can with mikmik in place of tallano gold” will be given to the winner.

It will be noted that Marcos’ supposedly gloomy expression in an interview was reported at the time to be an indication of drug users. However, some internet users were offended by Guanzon’s actions as a disability advocate because smiling is one of the characteristics of individuals with impairments.

Netizens chastised the retiring commissioner, expressing their displeasure with her advocacy for the creation of mannerisms and persons with facial paralysis and impairment. Stroke, Bell’s palsy, trauma, tumors, infections, and Lyme Disease are all possible causes of paralysis in individuals.

On the other side, Guanzon clarified her new task. Her response is that her ngiwichallenge is not designed to upset individuals with disabilities and is not for the ill.

“No to drugs ! Our #ngiwisquad challenge no offense po sa mga na stroke. Cocaine jaw po yang ngiwi namin dito. Join!” she wrote.
