The health experts discovered the disease in Panay Island covering the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo. Males with maternal roots from Panay were mostly affected by the disease.

“XDP, it is known to cause progressive dystonia with or without parkinsonism among Filipino males with maternal roots from the Panay Island in the Philippines,” Evangelista Medical Specialty Hospital adult neurologist Dr. Johanna Melissa Destriza said.

Destriza said there are over 500 Filipino patients with XDP have been recorded in Panay Island since 1970. As of now, there is no cure for the disease but there are several treatments to give patients the chance to live a normal life.

Makati Medical Center and Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center movement disorder neurologist Dr. Jed Ong said that there are some female patients diagnosed with this condition but the symptoms are milder compared to men.

“To be honest, up until this moment hindi rin namin masagot kung bakit talaga sa Panay Island lang and hindi pa namin napagtatagpi-tagpi lahat kumbaga kulang pa yung mga datos natin para masabi na eto talaga yung reason,” Ong said.
