Former Sen. Bongbong Marcos Throws Question on Making “Political Dynasties” Illegal

BONGBONG MARCOS – Former Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. who is running for president in the Election 2022 spoke his stand about “political dynasties”.

In the Philippine government, there are popular surnames as several people having the said last name or coming from one family have held different positions. In fact, many of the former and incumbent senators in the country are sons or daughters of former lawmakers in the Senate. There are also former presidents who came from one family.

The popularity of these political clans and the fact that their families hold several key positions in the government raised different sides over “political dynasties”. Many incumbent government officials are against the political dynasty and are vocal that they have warned their families that another member from their family cannot run for a government post while they remain in office.

While there are thhose who are against “political dynasties”, there are also those who have doubts in making it illegal. One of them is presidential aspirant and former Sen. Bongbong Marcos.

The Marcoses are among the popular political clans in the Philippines. Marcos Jr. is a former senator who is currently running for president in the Election 2022. He is the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. who ruled the country for around two (2) decades. His mother, former First Lady Imelda Marcos, and sister Sen. Imee Marcos, have both held key positions in their family’s bailiwick.

Currently, Ilocos Norte is led by Gov. Matthew Joseph Marcos Manotoc, the son of Sen. Imee Marcos, while Laoaga, Ilocos Norte’s mayor is Michael Marcos Keon, a nephew of the former Pres. Marcos.

With regards to “political dynasties”, based on the report, former Sen. Bongbong Marcos raised a question on why it should be made illegal. According to him, dominant political families are not necessarily bad. He stressed that the best “anti-dynasty” provision in the country is an election.

“If you’re worried about dynasties, then take everybody to an election, labanan mo yung dynasty,” he said.
