Coco Martin is the second choice for this new film of Brillante Mendoza
Ang Probinsyano actor Coco Martin has this reaction to the fact that he is the replacement for the role that was first offered to Aljur Abrenica.
The film Apag is directed by internationally-acclaimed director Brillante Mendoza. Based on the article in Inquirer, the director shared that he received a grant from the Hong Kong International Film Festival to shoot a film that does not involve intimate acts, politics, and violence.
With this, Brillante thought of doing a food movie with an all-Kapampangan cast. Aside from Aljur, the original cast included Jaclyn Jose, Gladys Reyes, and Sen. Lito Lapid.
They thought that Aljur was fluent in Kampangan, however, it turned out that he is not. “Apparently, he isn’t, because when he found out about this, he backed out. The shooting was scheduled the following day so we got packed up,” the director said.
That was the time the director called Coco Martin last December and the actor immediately said. “‘Leave it all up to me. Don’t worry. Just wait for me there,’” Brillante shared the response of Coco.
And so the shooting started and the actor even brought additional cast members such as Gina Pareño, Joseph Marco, Shaina Magdayao, and Mercedes Cabral.
The director also said that Coco Martin does not mind being called as a replacement for the initial lead actor. “It’s OK. Coco doesn’t mind,” Brillante said. Aside from this project, Coco also shot a film for the director last year titled Pula. This movie also featured Raymart Santiago and Julia Montes.
Brillante shared that when he pitched this project to Coco, he had a hard time choosing the leading lady because of the pandemic restrictions. The leading lady has a vital part in the story. With this, Coco Martin said that to avoid complexities, they will work with friends and so Julia and Raymart got in.
