Japanese Professors Creates Lickable TV Screen That Imitates Flavors On Display

TASTE THE TV – In classic Japanese fashion, a professor invented a tv screen that imitates the flavors it displays.

For decades, Japan has become the center for technological innovations. Because of this, the childhood dream of many is coming to reality – tasting the tv.

Aptly put, professor Homei Miyashita of Meiji University created a device he called “Taste the TV” (TTTV). And, with this, people can sample flavors over a flat-screen television.

But, how exactly does the TV transfer and imitate the flavors?

According to an article from ABS-CBN, the device uses a carousel of 10 flavor canisters which spray in combination to imitate the taste of certain food. Afterward, the flavor sample is rolled on hygienic film for viewers to taste.

“The goal is to make it possible for people to have the experience of something like eating at a restaurant on the other side of the world, even while staying at home“, said Miyashita.

Still, the professor couldn’t make this project alone. As per the article, Miyashita worked with 30 of his students and produced an array of flavor-related devices.

Among these inventions was a fork that could enhance the flavor of the food it picks up. Meanwhile, the TTTV was just one of his latest inventions. In terms of cost, the price range is competitive with most entry-mid level TVs at around 100,000 yen or $875.

Are there any other uses for the TTTV?

Miyashita believes that there are several potential applications for the TTTV. Among these are distance learning for sommeliers and cooks. Additionally, he said that the TV would be perfect for tasting games and quizzes.
