Freddie Aguilar Slams BBM Supporters for Allegedly Stealing His Song

Freddie Aguilar Lashes Supporters of BBM for Stealing His Song as Their Jingle

Veteran singer Freddie Aguilar slammed the supporters of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos (BBM) for allegedly stealing his song for their campaign jingle.

The OPM icon took social media to accuse presidential candidate supporters of stealing his song “Ang Lider 2022,” which is part of a series of songs by Pinoy music icons for the YouTube channel “We Need a Leader 2022.”

“May nagpapakalat sa social media na ‘yong kantang sinulat, kinanta, at tinugtog ko na “We Need A Leader, 2022” ay tumutukoy daw kay Bong Bong Marcos Jr.,” Aguilar said in a post on his social media account yesterday.

The well-known Filipino folk performer protested that this was not the case, even claiming that the tune he wrote was stolen from him. He emphasized that they just modified the music video without requesting the creator’s permission and utilized it for political objectives, accusing them of stealing.

“Inedit lang nila ‘yong music video na walang paalam sa gumawa at inangkin nila. Kumbaga ninanakaw nila ‘yong kanta,” he said. ‘Wag naman sila ganyan. Gamitin nila ‘yong sa kanila, ‘wag ‘yong hindi sa kanila.”

On February 15, 2021, the song ‘The Leader 2022’ was published on YouTube for the first time, and it has already received 1.5 million views. In the song’s lyrics, Aguilar states that in a time of epidemic, when the economy is failing and the country’s issues are numerous, we need a president with talent and the ability to lead.

“Ang presidente ko’y may utak, may paninindigan s’ya ay tunay na leader. May bayag at matapang. May prinsipyo, may puso at damdamin sa tao,” part of the said song.

Based on the musician’s Facebook posts with Senator Manny Pacquiao, the video was referring to him as a presidential candidate. However, Aguilar’s song, which has been linked to presidential hopeful Marcos Jr., has resurfaced on social media in the last few weeks following the formal closure of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on the deadline of the certificate of candidacy and substitution.

Several videos and photographs of Marcos Jr. were interspersed throughout Aguilar’s song as if to demonstrate that this was the singer’s candidate. Meanwhile, the YouTube channel “We Need a Leader 2022” supports voter education advocacy, which is at the heart of the songs they’ve created.
