Personnel of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) has seized P50 million worth of goods allegedly smuggled inside a mall in Manila.

Fake apparel, accessories, laptops and other equipment, and videoke machines were among the things seized. According to Nico Acosta, a lawyer representing a complaint, they have been investigating for months and have established the goods are counterfeit after completing test purchases.

“Nagconduct po kami ng masusing imbestigasyon sa loob ng ilang buwan. Tinignan namin, minanmanan namin itong establisyemento na ‘to. Nagconduct din kami ng mga test buys and confirmed nga po, positive, maraming brands ang ipinepeke,” Acosta said.

Owners of allegedly counterfeit merchandise, according to authorities, must show that they have documentation for their goods. According to Dominic Garcia of the BOC, many respectable business owners lose money as a result of criminal activity.

He went on to say that the health hazard and risks of fake electronics are more critical and that they could possibly be the cause of the fire. To avoid redistribution in the market, the BOC has decided to destroy all proven counterfeit merchandise.
