Meralco November Price Hike Due To Malampaya Shutdown

Meralco Consumers Get November Price Hike Following Malampaya Shutdown

MERALCO PRICE HIKE – Sadly, consumers of the Manila Electric Co will get another price hike this November.

This follows the shutdown of Malampaya’s natural gas facility. Because of this, Meralco was forced to pump up generation charges. According to an article from Philstar, the overall electricity rate shot up by P0.3256 per kWh in November.

Meralco November Price Hike Due To Malampaya Shutdown

This equates to a roughly P65 increase in the power bill of a residential customer that uses 200 kilowatts per hour. Meanwhile, Meralco explained that the increase was due to the outage of power from Malampaya’s gas field from October 2 to 25.

That outage supplied 40% of the power Luzon requires to run electricity to residential areas. Due to this, Meralco had to tighten energy supplies which caused a generation charge to jump by P0.2911 per kWh this month.

However, Meralco said the electricity rate could’ve possibly been higher. But, the company asked its suppliers to defer some of the generation costs.

At the same time, the company’s ongoing implementation of the “Distribution Rate True-Up” reimbursement, which began in March, helped to soften the rate increase this month.
