“Utak Talangka” – Roque Calls Out Lawyers Saying He’s Unfit For ILC

Roque Calls Over 150 Lawyers “Utak Talangka” Following Objections To ILC

HARRY ROQUE – Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque called over 150 lawyers “Utak Talangka” after raising their objection to his International Law Commission nomination.

Roque is campaigning to be nominated as one of the members of the ILC. However, several hundred lawyers from the Philippines had stressed that he is unfit for the position.

In total, 152 lawyers wrote to nearly 200 Permanent Missions and Members States of the United Nations Generally Assembly. They said that they need to register a “vehement objection” to Roque’s nomination.

According to an article from Philstar, one of the lawyers said:

as a lawyer, Roque is supposed to be a purveyor of facts and the truth and should uphold the administration of justice, a role he has sacrificed in exchange for his blind loyalty to a strongman president

Moreover, the lawyers said that Roque had been undermining International mechanisms. “As fellow lawyers, we are scandalized by his spins and reinvention of basic legal principles and concepts in his zealousness to repackage President Duterte’s pronouncements of questionable legal and constitutional bases“, the lawyers added.

Following this, the Presidential Spokesperson said that he had accepted that there are Filipinos who are “utak talangka”. During one of his press briefings, Roque said:

Well, tanggap ko na po na mayroon talagang mga Pilipino na utak talangka. Siguro talaga kinakailangan tanggalin natin ‘yan sa ating mga pagkatao. Pero ganoon pa man, inaasahan ko na ‘yan.

In less than a week, the international body would deliberate on Roque’s candidacy.
