Doctor Fined After Missing Surgery To Eat Lunch & Falling Asleep Afterward
DOCTOR FINED FOR LUNCH – A surgeon was fined $6,000 after missing surgery because he wanted to eat lunch.
Obviously, lunch is an important meal. It is what drives you through the rest of the day. As such, many would say that skipping lunch is a bad thing. Unfortunately, when you’re a surgeon, you can’t just skip a major surgery for lunch.
Back in 2016, Dr. Tony Tannoury, 54-years-old, left the operating room to eat lunch inside his car. Afterward, he fell asleep and missed the entire surgery altogether. Luckily, a chief resident was available to take his place after he missed it.
However, Tannoury wasn’t just any regular surgeon. He was the head of spine surgery at Boston Medical Center. Because of this incident, the Massachusetts medical board reprimanded the doctor and fined him $6000.
Additionally, the board ordered him to finish five educational credits in professionalism. Furthermore, the board tasked him to eview regulations for supervisors.
Meanwhile, Boston Medical reprimanded the head surgeon. The hospital stated that he violated their medical policy requiring all surgeons to be present for critical operations.
But, netizens now ask why was the doctor only reprimanded now. According to a report from the Westerly Sun, a Boston Medical spokesperson said they reported the incident to the medical board.
However, they did not disclose when they specifically reported Tannoury. For his part, Tannoury did not respond to any requests for comments regarding his case.
The state Board of Registration in Medicine said Tannoury was the attending surgeon for trauma emergencies during the night they took the patient in. He was also the one who took the patient to the emergency room.
