TV Performer with Cancer Air Dismay after Victimized by “Rent-a-Car Scam

Police authorities are now on the hunt against the person behind the “rent-a-car” scam that victimized a TV performer who is now battling cancer.

Several fraud victims have filed complaints with GMA News, including a TV anchor who required more money for her cancer treatment. Pawning cars with the promise of monthly installment payments is part of the scam.

Some of the victims were acquaintances of the suspect, including a TV host-comedienne named “Sett” who was diagnosed with stage 2 cancer. Sett consented to a friend’s suggestion to include her in a “rent-a-vehicle” investment, in which Sett would give the suspect P150,000 in exchange for an expensive car as collateral because she needed the money for her treatment.

Sett would profit from the agreement, according to the suspect, and would be paid P30,000 per month in installments. The suspect also produced paperwork proving their ownership of the vehicle.

The first P30,000 was given to Sett the next month. The suspect requested to borrow the car the next month and stated that they would replace it with another. This is when the suspect stopped making payments and refused to refund Sett’s P150,000. They couldn’t be reached either.

According to her, the suspect was aware that she was ill and in need of financial assistance. She pleaded with his child, but it was in vain. Another victim, “Len,” was kidnapped for P330,000.

Some of the monthly amounts were sent to him, while others were postponed until the suspect could no longer be reached. The pawned cars were discovered to have been borrowed from other victims, and the documentation submitted to the victims was falsified.

It’s possible that the swindle involves syndicates, according to Highway Patrol Group Chief PIO Police Lieutenant Colonel Christian Dela Cruz. The auto renter lends the vehicle to the syndicate, which then sells, rents, or pawns the vehicle to others.
