Local Fisherfolks of Quezon Province Found Dead Mola-Mola in Tayabas Bay

The local fisherfolks of Sariaya town in Quezon province found a dead Mola-Mola or Ocean sunfish in Tayabas Bay.

On Tuesday (October 5, 2021), the local residents of Sariaya town in Quezon province found an Ocean sunfish (Mola mola) in the coastal area of Tayabas Bay. The people believed that the fish has been trapped in a net.

The local government’s agriculture office fishery technician Sherwin Rosales said that the fisherman found the remains of the huge fish around two kilometers away from the coastal village of Guis-Guis San Roque.

The giant sea creature has a length of 2.8 meters, width of 1.8 meters and weight of 500 kilograms. Fish warden or “bantay-dagat” assisted the fisherman to bring the sea creature at the shore.

Rosales said that the fisherfolk and the bantay dagat personnel have buried the half a ton fish. He believes that the fish was trapped in net fisheries targeting other species, which leads to its death.

The US-based international organization that focused on studies of the oceans (Oceana) said that sunfish is the heaviest bony fish in the world.

“It is the heaviest bony fish in the world, reaching weights of up to 5,100 pounds (2,300 kg), and the distance from the top of the dorsal to the bottom of the anal fin can be as much as 14 feet (4+ m),” Oceana said.

Oceana failed to assess the mola-mola fish but explained that it is rare and its populations have depleted in some areas.
