As a response to the issue, President Guillermo Lasso stated that the bloodshed was due to gangs fighting for power. Based on an article from ABS-CBN, he said:

“It is unfortunate that criminal groups are attempting to convert prisons into a battleground for power disputes

I ask God to bless Ecuador and that we can avoid more loss of human life”

The fight that occurred earlier this week became one of the most violent incidents in Ecuador’s prison system. Meanwhile, similar incidents also took place during February and July 2021.

At least 79 people had died in the February riots, meanwhile, 22 lives were lost last July. Now, the government deployed military personnel outside the prison.

Meanwhile, hundreds rushed into the jail seeking information regarding their relatives. Additionally, Lasso said they would assist the families of the slain or dead inmates.

Sadly, six of the slain prisoners in the Penitenciaria del Litoral were reportedly decapitated. In lieu of the events, the government said they would release more funds to build new wards and improve the penitentiary system.
