NBI Raids Illegal Online Sabong Event in Nueva Ecija, Arrest 250 Individuals

The personnel of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested 250 individuals after being caught during the raid in an illegal online sabong event in Nueva Ecija.

The operator, employee, and gambler of the suspected illegal online cockfight in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija, are among the 250 persons arrested. The raid was carried out at Mavin’s Events Center in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija, according to Atty. Emeterio Dongallo Jr., chief of the NBI-Special Project Team.

They conducted out the raid after some legal e-cockfighting operators in the country reported to their office, according to Atty. Dongallo. He claimed that the illicit cockfighters operated in a similar manner as the legal cockfighters.

“Meron silang pasabong, tapos nila-live stream nila then bettors will bet online. Ang problema lang hindi sila nagbabayad ng franchise,” said Dongallo.

Thousands of dollars in betting money, as well as production equipment such as cameras and computers used for live streaming cockfighting events and cockfighting chickens, were seized during the investigation. Because it is online, the infraction is illegal gambling PD 1602 under the cybercrime prevention act, according to the authority.

Authorities are also concerned that illegal gaming could be the superspreader event of the COVID-19 in the area.  According to the NBI official, the government is losing a lot of money as a result of illegal cockfighting. The legitimate enterprise, according to the official, will pay monthly income tax, which will purportedly assist the government fund the pandemic fight.

According to a person who identified himself as MJ who appeared before the authorities, they were complete with the paperwork for their operation, but nothing could be presented during the raid. Officials from the NBI are looking into who might be behind the illegal activity.
