Villar Hoping Duterte Signs Cash Assistance For Farmers Act Of 2020

BENEFITS FOR RICE FARMERS – Senator Cynthia Villar is hoping President Rodrigo Duterte signs a law that benefits rice farmers.

Villar, who chairs the Senate agriculture and food committee said the Cash Assistance to Filipino Rice Farmers act of 2020 could benefit 1.673 million small-time rice farmers. “I strongly believe that our farmers need more support and assistance to cope with the several challenges, especially now that we are in a pandemic“, she said.

The controversial Senator who once said “Pinoy Farmers are Incompetent” now champions the well-being of the same group. Based on an article from Philstar, the Senator stated:

“Any amount we give to our farmers will be a big help to augment their income and improve their poor living conditions”

With the implementation of the new act, the excess of the P10-billion Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund collection from the Bureau of Customs shall automatically go to cash assistance access for rice farmers. Moreover, those who own two hectares or less of land shall be given the amount.

The BOC reported in September that it had collected P11.69 billion in tariffs from 1.74 million metric tons of rice imports from January to August this year. Villar also stated that they chose to accept the House version of the Cash Assistance for Filipino Farmers Act, House Bill 9950, which states that the beneficiaries must be rice farmers with less than two hectares of rice land.
