Jailbreak Attempt in Surigao del Sur Lead to 4 Death from 13 Inmates, Guard Injured

Authorities recorded four (4) deaths from 13 inmates who were allegedly involved in a jailbreak attempt in Surigao del Sur.

According to the report, 13 convicts from the Lianga District Jail in Surigao del Sur attempted to flee. The escape attempt occurred when on-duty jail officials were serving breakfast, according to Jail Supt. Bernie Ruiz, Assistant Regional Director for Administration and Operations of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Caraga.

The convicts are accused of seizing a jail employee who was supposed to open the cell gate so they could have their food. Based on the report, Ruiz is convinced that the attempted escape was planned.

“Bigla nilang ginawa na bilang isang pagkakataon na i-overrun ‘yung secondary gate ng jail natin, mayroon naman tayong nakabantay doon. Hindi inaasahan ‘yung personnel natin na naka-post doon sa secondary gate ay na-overrun ng limang PDL na may dala-dalang ice pick at natutukan yung JO1 Trainee Rebuyo natin at kasama rin ‘yung personnel natin na si JO1 Trimidal,” said Ruiz.

A disturbance erupted, and people in the tower witnessed it firing a warning shot. Despite this, the inmates are said to have been assaulted. The three inmates held a trainee and regular workers hostage while a correctional officer brandished a gun at them.

After an inmate grabbed the gun of a jail employee they had kidnapped, they traded gunfire. A total of four convicts were killed, with another injured. Ruiz acknowledged that the Lianga District Jail has a security issue.

Due to inmates attempting to flee, they despatched six employees and issued new high-powered rifles last week. The four people killed were suspected NPA members, while the others were accused of murder, kidnapping for ransom, rape, and violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

Because of the event, the jail is currently on red alert. To prevent drawing sympathy from other detainees, the other inmates participating in the escape attempt have also been segregated.
