Japan Determined to Address Demand for Food Supply on Moon

JAPAN – The Japanese government and its space agency will work with several researchers in studying food production on moon.

More and more countries and private individuals are into space exploration now. The moves are usually spearheaded by people who have personal dreams of flying to space and those who are inclined to business.

Last month, two (2) flights to space were made and things became successful. The first flight had British billionaire Richard Branson who took the spaceflight with his team. The were aboard the vessel of his own company, the VG.

Branson and his team returned successfully and the billionaire is very much eager to open the said experience to a lot more people. Currently, spaceflight tickets are already sold by VG.

Aside from Branson, another business magnate, billionaire and Amazon’s former Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Jeff Bezos, also flew to space in July. He was with his brother, an elderly woman, and a teenager in the said successful space flight.

Aside from the these business magnates, the government of Japan is also determined to know more about what’s outside of the Earth and the possibilities in the Moon. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the Japanese government and its space agency is targeting studies on food production in the lunar space.

The said study is a joint study of the government and some private entities. Based on the report, it aims to address demands for food supply on Moon as shipments from Earth may not be practical for long-term missions.

Space Foodsphere, a food research group based in Tokyo, is the one that will lead the research which is set to push through in March. Among the members of the group are Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, the system integrator NTT Data Corp., and Ajinomoto Co., a seasoning maker company.

Also, Euglena Co. is part of the project. The research will start at a domestic facility and then they will transfer to a location that is the same with the environment in Moon like the Antarctica. They target to develop technologies that could pave the way for indoor crops on the lunar space.
