Nas Daily Called Out As “Whang-Od Academy” Not Real According To Relative
WHANG-OD ACADEMY – According to Gracia Palicas, Whang-od’s granddaughter, Nas Daily’s “Whang-Od Academy” is not real.
Whang-od, also known as Maria Oggay is described as the “last” and oldest “mambabatok” or tradition tattooist. Furthermore, she is part of the Butbot tribe which belongs to the Kalinga ethnic group.
Because of her talent and reputation, Whang-od has been sought after by many who wanted a traditional tattoo. Additionally, she got so popular that she got featured on Nas Daily around April of 2021.
Following this, a few months after the feature, Nas Daily announced a new “academy” where people could sign up and learn about how to do the traditional “mambabatok” style of tattooing called “Whang-od Academy”.
However, according to Palicas, her grandmother never signed any contract with Nas Daily. In a public Facebook post, Palicas called out Nas Daily saying:
WARNING!!! Whang Od Academy is not real. My Grandmother did not sign any contract with @NasDaily to do any academy. Some people are taking advantage of our culture. PLEASE HELP US STOP this disrespect to the legacy of Apo Whan Od and the Butbot Tribe.

As of writing, Nas Daily has yet to respond to the criticism online. Furthermore, in their website, you can no longer see the “Whang-Od Academy” being featured. However, netizens have screen captured it before it was deleted.
For the entry price of P750, you could “learn the ancient art of tattooing”. But, this never had the blessing and permission of Whang-Od herself, according to her granddaughter.
