South Korean Archer Wins 2 Gold For Country But Criticized For Short Hair

SOUTH KOREAN ARCHER – An San, South Korea’s top Archer, won her country not one but two gold medals in the Olympics.

However, despite her victory for her country, there were a slew of netizens from South Korea who bashed her because of her hairstyle. According to an article from Unilad, male netizens have criticized her for cutting her hair short.

Furthermore, they believed that her decision to cut her hair was an expression of anti-male undertones. This was after women from South Korea started to cut their hair short to oppose beauty standards.

Adding to this, local media reporters from South Korea also piled on and asked “unnecessary questions”. As such, her coach was forced to block reporters unaware of the controversy.

But, in response to the online abuse, An has found a tremendous amount of support on social media. Among these people was Jang Hye-yeong, a South Korean lawmaker who said:

Even if you win an Olympic gold medal with your own skills and abilities, as long as sexism persists in our society, you get insulted and asked to be deprived of your medal just because you have short hair.

We are facing a strange day in which Korean archery is now the best in the world, but the national dignity is thrown to the ground because of sexism.
