DOH Says Confirmed Antique Delta Variant Cases Were Local Due To Lack Of Foreign Travel History

ANTIQUE DELTA VARIANT LOCAL CASES – According to the Department of Health, the newly confirmed COVID-19 Delta Variant patients in Antique had not travelled outside the Philippines prior to infection.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, several variants of concern are being looked out for. Recently, the world had turned its eyes on the Delta Variant which ravaged countries such as India and Indonesia.

Currently, the Philippines, despite its restrictions to international travel, had confirmed its first cases of the variant. However, two of these cases found in Antique caused concern as both had no travel history outside the country before infection.

Dr. Maria Sophia Pulmones of Local Health Support Division of Department of Health-Centers for Health Development in Region 6 said:

Sa ngayon, based sa aming coordination sa Provincial Health Office ng Antique, [they] are considered as local cases. So walang history of travel outside of Philippines. Posibleng andu’n sila nahawa sa area nila

According to an article from ABS-CBN, one of the patients, tagged as Delta Variant Patient No. 34 was a 78-year-old female. This patient died last May 31. Meanwhile, the last case, Patient No. 35, had already finished a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

This, person had already been tagged as “recovered”. But, both were unvaccinated before testing on May 28. As per the article, the genome sequence which came last Friday, confirmed they were positive for the Delta Variant.

Because of this, Pulmones said that they are currently in talks with local officials to conduct a tightened contact tracing of the two Delta variant positive patients. “Yung recommendation is to do the 3rd generation pero ang priority is yung close contact nila,” she added.
