PESU Confirms Deceased COVID-19 Patient in Davao Oriental Positive for Beta Variant

COVID-19 PATIENT IN DAVAO ORIENTAL – A coronavirus patient in Davao Oriental who died tested positive for the Beta variant.

Unfortunately, several variants of COVID-19 were detected amid the fight against the pandemic. These new variants prompted stricter measures and speedy actions in the pursuit to achieve population protection against the virus.

Currently, among the variants of concern are the Delta variant and the Beta variant. The former was first detected in India and it brought a devastating situation to the country. Hospitals were filled up and doctors even pleaded for help as they ran out of resources for the treatment and they can no longer accommodate the flock of patients.

The spike of the COVID-19 cases in India led to hundreds of deaths. Mass cremation even happened as crematoriums can no longer accommodate all the dead bodies.

With regards to the Beta variant, it was first detected in South Africa. Just like the Delta variant, it is a variant of concern because of its higher transmissibility. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found it to spread more quickly compared to other variants.

One of the countries that detected cases of the Beta variant is the Philippines. According to the report, the COVID-19 patient in Davao Oriental is a 63-year-old man from Mati City. The Provincial Epidemiologic Surveillance Unit (PESU) expressed that the patient died last May 17.

The said COVID-19 patient in Davao Oriental was confined at the Davao Regional Medical Center on May 9, 2021. He was diabetic and hypertensive. He passed away due to respiratory failure secondary to acute distress syndrome, secondary to COVID-19 pneumonia.
