Veteran Singer Elvis Costello Defends Olivia Rodrigo Over Plagiarism Accusation

The English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello defends Filipino-American singer Olivia Rodrigo after being accused of copying his song.

After being accused of plagiarizing the tone of one of her songs, Costello defended Filipino-American pop artist Olivia Rodrigo. Olivia’s song “Brutal” has been compared to Elvis Costello’s 1978 hit “Pump It Up.”

The song resemblance was widely discussed on social media, with many people criticizing it. Rodrigo’s song was described as “very much a direct lift” by a Twitter user.

Costello, on the other hand, said that he was unconcerned with the situation. Costello responded, “That’s great with me.” “That’s how rock & roll works,” says the singer.

“You take the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy. That’s what I did,” he added.

His song “Pump It Up” was influenced by Bob Dylan’s 1965 song “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” The veteran singer also used hashtags to refer to Chuck Berry’s 1956 hit Too Much Monkey Business, which was a source of inspiration for Dylan’s song.
