Villar Says If People Won’t Die From COVID-19, They’d Die From “Kagutuman”

COVID-19 OR KAGUTUMAN – Senator Cynthia Villar emphasized how Local Government Units (LGUs) should focus on agriculture amid the pandemic.

During the hearing of the Senate committee on local government joint with agriculture and finance, Villar heavily stressed the need for agriculture. According to an article from Inquirer, the senator said:

Local government should give more attention to agriculture because it’s very important because we now realize that agriculture is a source of our food

Furthermore, she noted that if people don’t die from COVID-19, they would die of hunger. “Kasi  kung hindi man  tayo mamatay sa COVID-19,  mamatay  naman tayo sa kagutuman”, stated Villar.

The statement was made after the panel took a look at her Senate Bill No. 1138 or the Local Government Agriculture Development Act. This sought to further emphasize LGUs roles in promoting agriculture development.

Moreover, the bill also provides a 10% budget allocated for agriculture and fisheries programs and services. The senator estimated that each municipality would receive P150 million from the additional P234 billion share next year. She also stated that a portion of this budget could be used for agriculture.
