Jobless Filipinos Spike To 4.14M Amid MECQ Says PSA

Number Of Jobless Filipinos Spike To 4.14M Following MECQ In April

JOBLESS FILIPINOS SPIKE – After the re-imposition of the modified enhanced community quarantine in April, 4.14M Filipinos suffered unemployment.

In the last months, the Philippines suffered from a massive surge in COVID-19 cases. In fact, the spike during during March and April was higher compared to last year. Furthermore, several new variants of COVID-19 were confirmed in the country.

As such, the government re-imposed an enhanced community quarantine around March to mid April within the NCR Plus bubble. This led to reduced daily COVID-19 cases. However, it did hit the economy hard, especially for the working class Filipinos.

But, once the caseload declined, the government decided to lower the quarantine level to an MECQ instead. Still, despite this, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that 4.14 million Filipinos were unemployed in April.

This left the Philippines’ unemployment rate at 8.7%, higher than March’s 7.1% unemployment rate or 3.44 million jobless Filipinos. With this, the government continues to attempt balancing the pandemic and the economy.

Meanwhile, with most common jobs out, some Filipinos look online for work from home opportunities. Similarly, classes continue to become modular and online. However, not everybody has this opportunity, as such, a compromise is needed for the betterment of the majority.

However, with the arrival of more vaccines, the Philippine government aims to provide “community protection” to the majority of Filipinos by November of 2021.
