Ely Buendia on Eraserheads: ‘We weren’t Itchyworms, Parokya’, Here’s why

Ely Buendia talked about this “reality” regarding Eraserheads

Former Eraserheads vocalist Ely Buendia strongly said that their band was not like its contemporaries Itchyworms and Parokya Ni Edgar.

During the 90s EHeads was among the top Pinoy bands until they became an icon for newcomers in the music industry. Undoubtedly, their songs will forever be remembered even by the younger generation.

However, in 2002, the original Eraserheas disbanded when Ely decided to leave after 13 years, based on the article in ABS-CBN News site.

In a recent podcast of Spotify podcast “Wake Up with Jim & Saab” of musician couple Jim Bacarro and Saab Magalona, the memorable songs of Eraserheads were enumerated as they guested Ely Buendia.

When the song “Minsan” was mentioned, the singer-songwriter said that the song makes him cringe now. “There are some songs, when you mature as a songwriter, [you hear] lyrics na medyo cringe-worthy. It’s not a specific line, but the whole sentimentality of it,” Ely said.

He then said that he had to explain his answer after the podcast hosts got surprised by what he said. “It’s about fans… I was kind of sick of fans saying, when the Eheads broke up, ‘You’re friends, you shouldn’t have [broken] up. You made us feel bad.’ I was sick of that. I think everything points to that song. That’s what they reference all the time,” he revealed.

Ely said that the song was never about their band but it was actually about his friends whom he spent time with In Kalayaan. He further revealed that he and his bandmates were never friends and that they were never close.

The singer-songwriter stressed that the reason why they disbanded was that there was no “friendship” between them outside the music they made. “We weren’t Itchyworms, we weren’t Parokya ni Edgar,” Ely said.

On the other hand, he stressed that they had very good working relationship. Then, Jim Bacarro mentioned that once Ely Buendia told him that the members of the Eraserheads never shared a round of drinks for leisure and the latter answered “never”.
