Stylist of Rabiya Mateo for Miss Universe 2020 pageant speaks about the issues of her national costume.
RABIYA MATEO – PH official delegate for the Miss Universe 2020 pageant is Rabiya Mateo and her photo walking with red stains goes viral.
Seemingly like the fusion of the winning colors of Pinay beauty queens crowned as Miss Universe such as Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach in royal blue and Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray in fiery red is the national costume of PH delegate for this year’s pageant Rabiya Mateo.
However, in a live stream which she did shortly after the portion has ended, she was seen tearing up apologizing to those people who bashed her and got disappointed with her performance. The national costume of Rabiya loudly speaks through wings in blue and red with deep meanings. It was adorned with feathers.
The outfit is supposed to have a headpiece but it was not worn due to its weight and the long train of her outfit was cut because it was as well too heavy for her to carry. Such changes have ignited issues online and the critical comments from a lot of people have what made Rabiya broke down in a video.
Currently viral online is a close-up photo of her walking with red stains of blood on her leg. People online have seen it and appreciated her hard work and sacrifices to represent the country in the international competition. Behind her flawless walk and a big smile is actually the pain of carrying those heavy wings and of the wound wearing custom platform Nereku heels.

Rabiya’s stylist Rain Dagala clarified on Preview that the outfit is the creation of late fashion designer Rocky Gathercole who passed away this year. In honor of Rocky’s final creation, they only did some tweaking for some finishing touches. A headdress was also decided to be made to put an added extravagance.
Clarifying the issues of her outfit, the stylist revealed that if Rabiya followed and worn everything, she’d have to carry a whopping 60 kilos or 132 pounds and this weight is something Rabiya admitted that she cannot do. As much as she wanted to have everything as planned, it might ruin her performance.
“Nung sinukat ni Rabiya yung costume niya [for the preliminaries], sabi niya, ‘Hindi ko kaya ilakad ‘to. Gusto ko siyang ilaban pero hindi ko kaya.’ At that point, yung skirt naging 20 kilos na from 15 kilos [because of the embellishments and beading]. Tapos yung wings naging 21-25 kilos na siya, tapos yung head piece ni Manny 15 kilos—ang bigat din. So we had to choose comfort,” Dagala shared.
