Pokwang Reminisces Childhood Struggles w/ Her 11 Siblings

Here are the hardships that Pokwang went through when she was growing up

Comedienne-host Pokwang reminisced the struggles that she and her 11 siblings went through when they were younger.

Nicknamed as Pokie in showbiz, Marietta Subong, had a colorful life growing up, as what she shared in a recent interview with PEP. She said that they were 14 in their household, including her parents.

It was a challenging life for them also and Pokie said that at that time, she did not know if they will survive. “E, maagang nawalan ng trabaho si Tatay kaya nagkanya-kanya kaming diskarte sa buhay. Nagtinda kami ng kung ano-ano, naglako sa palengke, nagtinda sa simbahan,” she shared.

The comedian also said that they would have alternating duties in selling, Those who have classes in the morning, would sell in the afternoon and those with classes in the afternoon would do the selling in the morning.

Even their schooling was also alternate. Pokwang shared that older siblings would stop schooling for a while in order to give way for the younger ones.

“Yung pag-aaral namin, alternate din. Hihinto muna yung iba, pagbibigyan muna yung mas nakababata. Nag-abot-abot nga kami nung Grade VI. Apat kami na sabay-sabay nag-graduate kasi kailangan namin magbigay ng daan sa mas nakababata,” the comedienne revealed.

That was there situation back then and she can say that it was difficult. However, Pokie said that those struggles made her stronger and what she is now.

Their poverty back then also led her to decide to go to Japan. Pokwang said that she lied to her parents about this because she was just 16 years old at that time. She also had to lie about her age in order for her to find a job abroad.

“Yun ang nakita ko na super na-stress sila sa ginawa ko. Sabi ko, ‘Pasensiya na pero kailangan ko nang gawin ito. Gusto kong makatulong,'” she shared.
