Floating Community Pantry Launched By Philippine Coast Guard In CamSur

FLOATING COMMUNITY PANTRY LAUNCHED – Several community pantries have popped up in local communities across the Philippines.

Usually, you’d see your local community pantries nearby your neighborhood. However, the Philippine Coast Guard decided to make their own community pantry in the middle of the ocean.

According to Lt. Ailene Abanilla, PCG commander in Camarines Sur, the idea came about after deciding to donate food to fishermen who were unable to fish due to Typhoon Bising. Those included in the community pantry were rice, eggs, canned goods, and noodles.

Based on an article from ABS-CBN, the relief items were donations from the PCG itself and other private groups. Furthermore, Abanilla stated that they would be launch relief drives in other areas in the following days.

The concept of the community pantry stemmed from the roots of the Filipino tradition, Bayanihan. Here, people would band together and help a neighbor through hardships and tribulations.

The first of which started in Maginhawa Street, Quezon City. Since then, almost all parts of the Philippines have launched their own local community pantries in a bid to help out others amid the pandemic.
