Toni Gonzaga Reveals How She Got Lead Role In ‘I love you, Piolo’ TV Ad

Toni Gonzaga shared the story behind her commercial with Piolo Pascual

Actress-host Toni Gonzaga revealed how she got the lead role in a softdrink TV advertisement wherein she shouted “I love you, Piolo!” to A-list actor Piolo Pascual.

In a recent episode of I Feel U, Toni shared that she was just supposed to be one of the supporting cast members of the famous commercial back in 2001. She was just 17 years old back then and just starting her showbiz career after she joined GMA’s Metropop Talent Search in 1997, based on the article from PEP.

“It was a whole day of workshop for different leads that they were trying. Hanggang sa, finally, mga alas singko na ng hapon, napagod na sila magpa-go see ng mga bagong leads,” she shared.

After that, the caster just randomly pointed at her to try the test shot. When this opportunity came to her, Toni said to herself that she will definitely do her best. She remembered that when she shouted the line, one person chuckled at the back and there was no other reaction.

With that, Toni Gonzaga believed that the lead part was not for her. However, this time she was wrong. “Pagbalik ko sa upuan ko, hindi ko makakalimutan iyon, lumapit sa akin iyong A.D. [assistant director]. Lumapit siya sa akin. ‘O, ikaw na raw, ikaw na iyong lead. Nagustuhan ka,” the actress-host shared.

After that, she ran to the comfort room and cried because she got a “yes”. “I had to compose myself ‘tapos hinihintay ako lumabas kasi nga, ‘Anyare doon sa babae? Bakit tumakbo sa CR?’ Hindi ko ma-contain iyong emotions! ‘Shocks, totoo ba ito? Ako iyong pinili?” Toni recalled.

From that, she was known as the “I love you, Piolo” girl and her TV ad became popular. However, Toni Gonzaga did not expect that there was a negative effect to this. She was not taken to be part of any commercial back then because she is very much associated with the softdrink advertisement.

Fortunately, months after that, she became part of Eat Bulaga and Daddy Di Do Du.
