According to Forbes, the three newly-named beetle species are from the genus Binburrum, a group of brightly-colored beetles that are found in southern Australia.

The three beetles have the scientific names Binburrum articunoBinburrum moltres, and Binburrum zapdos.

The beetles doesn’t seem to have elemental powers of fire, ice, and electricity, as well as their appearance, with the exception of B. zapdos, which has black and yellow coloration like the legendary bird of electricity.

If there is one thing the beetles have in common with the birds is its apparent rarity. Like how the birds are some of the rarest and hardest to find and catch, the beetles are found to be rare to find since they are few, according to entomologists Darren Pollock and Yun Hsiao.

Due to the rarity of the specimens, Yun and Pollock decided to name them after the three legendary birds, based on the report.

Aside from the three beetles, there are other species that are named after Pokémon, they are:

  • Stentorceps weedlei – a wasp species named after Weedle due to the pointy spines in the middle of their heads
  • Chilicola charizard – a bee species named after Charizard
  • Aerodactylus scolopaciceps – a pterosaur species named after Aerodactyl
  • Bulbasaurus phylloxyron – dicynodont species named for bulbous snout. The genus coincidentally has the name Bulbasaur, while its specific epithet coincidentally translates to “leaf razor,” one of Bulbasaur’s trademark attacks.
