The said hashtag trended on the eve of the first year anniversary of the lockdown implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country which resulted in the closure of many businesses and the loss of millions of jobs.

A few hours after the tweet has been posted, PTV issued a statement saying that the intention and the people behind the “malicious post” are being investigated. The network also apologized for the “erroneous” posting.

“The management will certainly institute disciplinary actions against members of the social media team who are behind the erroneous posting,” according to a PTV statement.

State-run People’s Television has vowed to punish members of the social media team behind the failed tweet. PTV explained that the reason #DutertePalpak got through the network’s tweet was due to “predictive systems in the text entry phase and a failure to adequately review and screen the message that actually got posted.”
