Woman Dies Due to Starvation in Japanese Detention Center

A Sri Lankan woman passes away at a Japanese detention center due to starvation and leave a note expressing her sufferings.

A 33-year-old lady with name withheld has been detained at the Immigration Services Agency of Japan’s Nagoya Regional Immigration Bureau. The woman has been detained since August 2020 due to expired visa.

The woman leave a note requesting for provisional release and a denied request for medical care. The letter revealed that she is suffering hunger and the notes also contain her desire to eat inside the detention center.

“I want to go to a hospital to receive an intravenous drip, but immigration authorities would not take me,” the lady victim wrote on her note.

Japanese Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa said that the agency is already investigating the case and to confirm the woman’s cause of death. The embassy officials also discovered that the woman has record of checkups and has been hospitalized twice.

The group named START that supports foreigners in Japan reported that the woman was unable to walk or eat due to stress and deteriorating health during their last visit. The lady’s health is dire during her time at the custody.
