Lazada, Shopee Agreed to Tighter Restrictions to Suppress Seller of Fake Products

Leading online shopping platforms Lazada and Shopee agreed to set tighter restrictions to suppress the sellers of fake products online.

It will be recalled that Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said earlier that the country is becoming a target of counterfeit products due to the sellers of fake products are in Lazada and Shopee.

Although the two online selling platforms said before that they are closely monitoring the sellers of counterfeit products, they are still getting through. As a result, Lazada and Shopee have agreed to immediately remove fake products from their platform as soon as the brand owners complain.

They signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with some global and local brand owners that they will follow the code of conduct on the sale of counterfeit and pirated products.

Under the MOU they are required to maintain data of all sellers, verify their identities, and share the identity of violators when ordered by a court or requested by government regulators.

They are also required to suspend or permanently close the accounts of sellers selling counterfeit products. Among those who signed the MOU were Unilever Philippines, GlaxoSmithKline, Globe Telecom, the Philippine Retailers Association, and the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines.

The Department of Trade and Industry, on the other hand, welcomed the move made by Lazada and Shopee because it is a good start to strengthen consumers’ confidence in e-commerce.
