The fatality was identified as Alwen Cereño, aged 32 years old, according to a report from Manila Bulletin.

The suspect found a chance to escape while he was being transported back to the Mambaling Police Station. This was after he was brought to the police molecular laboratory for a COVID-19 test.

This was followed by a manhunt operation that was conducted by the police, who found the suspect in Barangay Prado in the city.

Cereño resisted arrest and started to fire against pursuing police officers, who retaliated in response, leading to the death of the suspect.

During the shootout, Police Staff Sgt. Sergeant Chuby Caloscos was wounded in the leg. Another police officer was also shot in the body but fortunately for him, he was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time.

The police officer was then presented to Philippine National Police chief Police Gen. Debold Sinas, who visited the Police Regional Office-Central Visayas headquarters Friday.

“It could have been more serious if not for the bulletproof,”

Police Major Glenn Hife, who is from the Regional Drug Enforcement Group-Central Visayas, identified Cereño as the leader of a robbery group operating in the city called “Spartan”.

Spartan is also involved in the illegal trade. Cereño was also recognized as the gunman in the killing of Police Senior Master Sgt. Maximino Macua, who was killed in a botched anti-drug operation in Barangay Mambaling a couple of years ago, based on the report.
