Duterte Gives Decision On Controversial Car Seat Law

DUTERTE CAR ON SEAT LAW – President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the deferment of the new controversial car seat law.

Earlier, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque announced that Duterte decided to defer the implementation of the law in his latest Palace briefing. Previously, Duterte expressed that he was against the new law as the Philippines still faced the pandemic.

Supposedly, the new car seat law or Republic Act No. 11229 (Child Safety in Motor Vehicles Act), aimed to keep children safe and secure while riding inside vehicles. However, there was a provision that stated children under 12 under 4’11” were required to sit on a car seat.

After this act was publicized, a flurry of negative comments from both netizens and lawmakers a like flooded. For many, the law was unnecessary, especially amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, when it comes to the “Motor Vehicle Inspection System” (MVIS) Roque said that it would no longer be mandatory. According to an article from Inquirer, the Presidential Spokesperson stated:
