LTO Earns Criticisms Online Over Privatization of Vehicle Inspection Services

LTO Receives Distasteful Remarks Over Privatization of Vehicle Inspection Services

LTO – The Land Transportation Office earned massive amount of criticisms over privatization of motor vehicle inspection services.

The agency received distasteful remarks and negative reactions from the public due to the new requirements for registration of vehicles in the Philippines. The stricter policy would allegedly extort more fees from motorists and driver.

Recently, LTO chief Edgar Galvante defended the privatization of motor vehicle inspection centers (PMVICs) and explained that the agency aims to evaluate the roadworthiness and performance of vehicles.

Galvante said that motorists would receive certificates of roadworthiness after passing the inspection. The LTO official explained that the inspection would reduce the increasing numbers of injuries and deaths due to road accidents.

“All vehicles that need to be registered have to go through the process to determine whether registration will be renewed. Previously, there was a policy that vehicles 15 years or older can no longer be registered. But now, the basis (for renewal is the) roadworthiness of the vehicle rather than the age,” Gavante said.

The inspection fee is amounting P1,500 to P1,800. Other motorists are claiming that even brand new vehicles failed the PMVIC test. Currently, there are only 24 PMVICs nationwide out of the 138 centers that will be opened.
