J&J Vaccine Promising Against New South African COVID-19 Strain

J&J Vaccine Shows Promising Results Versus New COVID-19 Variants

J&J VACCINE – Johnson & Johnson’s new coronavirus vaccine had shown promising results against multiple strains in a large global trial.

According to the company, a single-dose of its vaccine was found to be 66% effective in preventing multiple variants of the virus, including the South African strain. Across the board, the efficacy of the vaccine across 44,000 volunteers varied depending on the country.

In the United States, the vaccine was 72% effective. Meanwhile, in Latin America, this number dropped to 66%. However, in South Africa where a more infectious and vaccine resistant strain has spread, the efficacy was at 57%.

According to health experts, the data of the vaccines’ effects on South Africa showed diminishing results. However, this could still aid in containing the spread of the virus and potentially prevent fatalities.

In contrast, J&J’s rival vaccines such as Pfizer and Moderna both had an efficacy of 95% in two doses. But, those trials were mainly done on the United States before the spread of a more transmissible strain from the U.K. and South Africa.

Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic is still severely affecting 37 countries and infected more than 101 million worldwide. With new variants being discovered a year into the pandemic, U.S. infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci said:

It’s really a wake up call for us to be nimble and to be able to adjust as this virus will continue for certain to evolve
