DOH Says 57 Close Contacts Of UK Variant Patient In Bontoc Philippines Positive For Strain

UK VARIANT IN PHILIPPINES – Following the confirmation of local transmission of the new coronavirus strain from the United Kingdom, Bontoc records 57 more cases.

According to Department of Health Spokesperson and Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, 57 close contacts of a patients who returned from the UK tested positive for COVID-19. Furthermore, Vergeire said that of the 57 positive patients, 12 were found with the new virus strain.

Meanwhile, 135 of the 233 who took RT-PCR tests had a negative COVID-19 result. However, 41 are tests are still pending. Moreover, Vergeire said that the results may be revealed on Monday.

Afterward, health authorities would then test if they were also positive for the new virus strain from the UK. Currently, the Philippines has reported 17 coronavirus patients infected with the UK strain.

According to health authority from the UK, this new virus is not deadlier than previous strains. However, it has been found to be more transmissible which could lead to more serious cases in some infected individuals.
