AFP General On Leave Following Red-Tagging Of UP Alumni

UP RED-TAGGING INCIDENT – A General of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) went on leave after an alumni of the University of the Philippines was red-tagged.

Maj. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, deputy chief of staff for civil-military operations (J7) announced going on leave. He explained that his decision was due to the pending investigations of the recent UP Red-Tagging issue.

Recently, Arevalo’s office published a list of communist rebels that hailed from the University. However, the list was proven erroneous with UP alumni demanding repercussions for Arevalo’s office.

Meanwhile, according to an article from AFP, Arevalo said he’d go on a leave of absence so he may not influence investigations.

In the light of these developments, I will go on a leave of absence so as not to influence the ongoing investigation…

Last week, the AFP Information Exchange posted a list of UP Alumni who were slain or captured during military operations on social media. But, the list turned out to be erroneous with supposedly “slain” UP alumni calling out the office that handles the account.

Because of this, Arevalo apologized for the blunder. “I personally take responsibility for their actions. This is the reason why I issued a public apology and reiterated it in my succeeding interviews“, the AFP General said.

Following this, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana removed Maj. Gen. Alex Luna, the deputy chief of staff intelligence (J2) from his position. According to Lorenzana, his unit was the source of the erroneous list.
