VP Robredo Says UP Is Not The Enemy, Says “Hindi Pa Huli Mag-Usap”
VP ROBREDO ON UP-DND ACCORD – Vice President Leni Robredo emphasized that the University of the Philippines is not the enemy of the state.
For the longest time, anti-communist groups have tagged UP as a breeding ground for NPA Recruits. As such, the Department of Defense (DND), from out of nowhere, severed its 31-year-old accord with the university.
As a response, Robredo, over dzXL said:
Unang una, napaka-sweeping, napaka-sweeping na mag-aabrogate ka ng isang malawakang kontrata na hindi mo man lang kinausap iyong other side of the party—basta ka lang mag-aabrogate
Furthermore, she said that it’s still isn’t too late to talk about appealing the broken accord and to find an agreement. Additionally, Robredo noted that the DND could go to UP to present valid concerns instead of outright treating the university as an enemy of the state.
Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana justified his actions saying that the accord’s termination was meant to protect UP and its community. He explained that with the accord broken, the DND, along with the military and police, can now prevent recruitment of the New People’s Army within its campuses.
However, Robredo stressed that a militaristic approach would not be the best solution to prevent radicalism. She said that the biggest recruiter of the underground movement wasn’t the NPA, but those people who are dissatisfied with the goverment.
According to an article from Manila Bulletin, the Vice President said good governance and focusing on poverty would address the communist insurgency instead. “If people are dissatisfied, if they feel they aren’t being heard, they would be attracted to radical solutions, they would be enticed“, the Vice President said.
