Vilma Santos Shares Message To Solons Who Oppose ABS-CBN Franchise Renewal

Here’s what Vilma Santos said to her fellow lawmakers about ABS-CBN’s franchise

Deputy Speaker Vilma Santos shared her message to other members of the House of Representatives who oppose the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN.

The issue on the Kapamilya network’s franchise became a controversial topic in Congress last year. After the hearing, 70 congressmen voted against the franchise renewal and so the network stopped its airing on the free TV channel.

Before 2020 ended, Senate President Tito Sotto filed a new bill seeking the renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise. Following this, actress-politician Vilma Santos also filed a bill in Congress with the same intention.

However, Anak Kalusugan Rep. Mike Defensor, who is also the vice-chairman of the House committee on legislative franchises, expressed that before filing the new bill, those that were filed previously should be withdrawn first.

In a recent interview by Inquirer columnist Dolly Anne Carvajal, Vilma Santos shared her thoughts regarding the bill she proposed.

“I refiled the bill for the renewal of ABS-CBN franchise because I believe that it is the right thing to do. During this pandemic, the network would be a big help to Filipinos in many ways,” the Star for All Season said.

Then, the veteran showbiz personality addressed her fellow lawmakers who opposed their desire to renew the franchise of ABS-CBN.

I understand their position. What is important, as Members of the House, we must respect each other’s decision or position in every issue. We’re all friends. At the end of the day, we should act as statesmen. We should respect the decision of the leadership.
Not thinking about her years of being in showbiz, Vilma Santos said that as a policymaker, she is hoping that the TV giant will be given another chance.
